When I remarked on her unusual appearance to Arthur’s mum she told me Bella’s poodle parent had been a phantom poodle and that was why Bella looked like she did. I had never heard of phantom poodles so I looked them up on the internet and I could see straight away where Bella got her unusual looks from.
“Is it alright for Arthur to bring his friend next week?” Arthur’s mum asked me one day. “Yes of course” I agreed and so the following Tuesday when Arthur’s mum arrived there were two little heads poking up over the side of the car door and peering out of the window. Arthur’s girlfriend was a Labradoodle called Bella. However Bella didn’t look like a conventional Labradoodle at all and in fact if I didn’t know she was one I would never have guessed what she was! Instead of being cream and fluffy her coat was quite rough and a lovely mixture of grey tones. She had very large expressive eyebrows and a long lolling tongue. Although she pulled a lot when on a lead she was very good when set loose and always came when she was called. Bella stayed with Arthur quite a lot when her family went away so as a result she often came to me for the day when Arthur had his regular weekly visits.
