We were driving back from Nicosia along the coastal road near Alagadi on one of the sections where the road cuts through the hillside when my husband remarked that he thought he had seen a goat by the side of the road or was it a dog? The animal was half-way up the steep bare earth of the cutting so we assumed it was a goat but on second glance realised it was a small dog which looked very frightened and out of place. By this time we had driven past so we decided to turn the car around and go back to see if the dog was OK. The dog was a young pointer approximately 4 or 5 months old and was shaking and looking disorientated and distressed. We called to him from the roadside and at this point he scrambled up the steep embankment away from us reaching the top. We thought he would just trot off into the countryside but instead he stood at the top shaking and then made his way down the embankment again where he remained precariously perched halfway down. At this point I suggested to my husband that he should climb up and try to retrieve the dog and this he did. The dog was just skin and bone, desperately thirsty and very weak. He didn't have any ID or collar and as we were in the middle of nowhere and there were no houses nearby we decided to take him back home with us. My husband carried the dog to the car and he was so weak that we thought he would die. On arrival at home we gave him plenty of water and I set about making him some rice with chicken which he ate ravenously. He began to perk up after this so we decided that we would take him to the vet in the morning for a check-up.
