I had no such concerns with my other guest Poppy, who was a young female Lurcher. With an attractive and unusual brindle coat, Poppy had 4 lovely long legs which made her far too tall to fit through any small gaps which may have existed in the fencing. She was a very cute girl and surprisingly well behaved considering her tender years. In fact she was really laid back and loved lounging around on the sofa in my conservatory, which was the exact opposite behaviour of what I would have expected of a dog with long legs and a lean physique, both characteristics which seemed to denote an insatiable appetite for exercise. This just goes to show that the old adage "you can’t judge a book by its cover" is very true.
Jack Russells are one of the most popular breeds in the UK and I have had quite a few pure bred ones as well as cross breeds come to stay over the years. Betty and Louis were two fine examples of this lively and intelligent breed. Betty had a smooth coat with a very pretty tri-colour pattern while Louis was a little bit bigger and had a rougher tan and white coat. The pair of them liked exploring around the garden but I was a bit concerned that they might find a handy pint sized gap in the fencing which would provide them with the perfect opportunity to squeeze through and access the paddocks beyond where a myriad of adventures would await them in the form of the pursuit of rabbits, pheasants and other wildlife. I needn’t have worried though as they both turned out to have very good recall and would appear immediately when summoned running across the lawn towards me from behind one of our many bushes.
