Coincidentally, just as we were thinking about this stray we noticed another dog in the same area. This dog was also of a golden/cream colour but was a totally different type of dog and was smaller in size. Over the next 3 days or so whenever we passed the lay-by we looked out for the dog, sometimes we saw it there other times we didn’t. I hoped the dog would move on to a more populated area where it might be able to get some food. On one occasion when we drove by we saw the dog by the side of the road and we actually stopped the car for a few seconds wondering what we should do, but then we tried to steel our hearts and drove on because we already have 4 rescue dogs from Cyprus and we don’t have room for any more…
That night there was a big storm. The rain was torrential and the wind howled loudly. I lay awake and I couldn’t stop thinking about the dog in the lay-by. The next day we were due to spend some time on the other side of the island and I said to my husband that we should stop and see if the dog was still there when we passed by. By the time we got to the lay-by it was dusk and there was no sign of the dog. We got out of the car and walked into the lay-by and then we went a short way along a dirt track that merged with the lay-by. Suddenly my husband said “there’s the dog”.
She came running up to me and jumped up in greeting, that was when I managed to get a good look at her. She was a small German Shepherd type puppy, probably around 5 to 6 months old, of a beautiful cream colour with a pretty black snout. She seemed really relieved to see me, almost as if she was my dog and had got lost while out on a walk. I bent down and told her she was coming with me. I picked her up and carried her to the car where I placed her on the back seat. She sunk down quietly and relaxed as if she had always traveled in the back of our car. As if she had always known us. We drove off into the night with our new companion sleeping soundly.
