Dexter, a 1 year old Staffie Labrador cross, was a pretty shade of light blonde with two white socks on his front legs. Lively and friendly he got on fine with Genghis so I agreed to take care of him until the summer holidays when his young owner was due to finish his university degree. I was a little taken aback when I realized that they wanted to leave Dexter with me straight away as I had thought he wouldn’t be arriving for a few days and they would all be going back home that day. However his owners left some money with me for his food and board and departed leaving Dexter in my care. At a stroke my household had increased by one. For better or worse Dexter had arrived.
One day out of the blue I got a message asking if I would be able to look after a dog for a period of 3 months. Dexter belonged to a university student who had had him staying at his halls of residence for a while however the rules had just been changed and dogs were no longer allowed to stay at the halls. As a result the student’s mother was desperately trying to find a place for Dexter while her son finished his studies. They had apparently tried several other places already but to no avail and they did not want to put Dexter in conventional kennels. As I am always a sucker for an animal in need I agreed to meet them and said I would provisionally take him in as long as he got on well with my Genghis so they traveled up to see me by train the next day.
